How to Restore Headlights PERMANENTLY

Headlight Restoration using Clear Coat. This video will show you how to clean and restore your headlights so they will never turn yellow or hazy again! You have seen videos on restoring headlights with bug spray, toothpaste, baking soda, and the kits you buy in the store, but all of these methods are temporary and eventually the haze and oxidation will come back.
My method will first make the headlight clear by wet sanding and then put a UV coat on it to seal it in.

After 3 coats of clear gloss... There is some haziness from paint I believe. What shall I do to get absolutely clear glass now?

@Ryan Fahlsing I'd rather have brand new ones if it bothered me that much and just have to take a few screws out. It's not hard to replace those, but this is a project that takes more than a day to do and involves a lot of annoying work. Yes, you can save some money, and if you like projects like these then it's worth it to do it. I do not like projects like these. The results can be spotty. I've done it before and was less than impressed, which is why I wound up just swapping mine. Different car.

Awesome video explaining all steps with attention to detail. I just purchased a vehicle where it looked like someone tried to do this and scratched the crap out of the headlights. I hope I the sanding with smooth out the scratches otherwise I will need to replace the headlights. I had someone walk me through the same steps on another vehicle I had and it worked awesome. The idiot who attempted it on the SUV I purchased should have watched this video LOL.

What if my headlight assembly is cracked and has a small hole on the outside of the Blinker ??? Will this still work or would I have to clean both the inside or replace the whole assembly?
ChrisFix Prieš 22 val
If your assembly is cracked you can try to repair it but more than likely you will need a new assembly!

I've tried a couple different kits and pastes with no success. I live in VT so my headlights are constantly being abused either by driving on dirt roads or the sand and salt in the winter. I had to replace my headlights on a previous car but Subaru headlights are expensive so I figured I had I'd try this. I had nothing to lose and Oh. My. God. the results are incredible! It is so easy and fast and my headlights are like new. Btw, I'm inpatient and if something can be done incorrectly then that's how I do it so when I say it's easy to do, then it IS easy to do. Thanks!

Yes, you can still sand it off no problem and use the correct clearcoat :

ChrisFix, I did everything you recommended in the video and applied the clearcoat, carefully and evenly. It was 60F when I did all this; I finished the third coat at 2:30PM. Overnight the temps dropped to 40F; when I went out this morning to check on the headlights, both were laced with spiderweb cracks. Do you think I'll be able to wet sand the clearcoat to remove the cracks with 2000/3000 grit sandpaper and then polish, or am I going to have to start over? Thanks!

I had the hazy orange peel problem after as well. I waited 5 days, then hit them with 2000, 2500, 3000,5000 and buffed polish. Used rotary wet sanding and buffer on a drill. Also finished with ceramic coat. If I can figure out how to upload before and after I will. This is my daughters 2007 rabbit with 97000 miles.

I left the paint to dry overnight, and went outside to apply the carnauba wax. The headlights looked dirty from hanging out overnight, so I wiped the headlights down with some more rubbing alcohol only to find out in horror that it was appearing to damage the clear coat. Is rubbing alcohol dangerous to apply to the clear coat after it has dried, and what do I do to un-donk myself?

Maj. Dude Prieš 6 dienų
@chris gab Just a clean, dry soft towel to remove the previously applied and dried car wax. You just put it on with circular rubbing motion, it looks clear and feels slippery at first. Not too much, just a good cover coat that makes the whole headlight slippery, and rub it in for 15-20 seconds. then, let it dry. 10-15 min should do. It will dry cloudy and feel sticky and powdery after it dries but when you rub it off, it will feel slick as snot. Do your whole car. Wax on, wax off, Daniel san.

chris gab Prieš 7 dienų
@Maj. Dude yeah but like do I have anything on the towel? like water or just the towel?

A soft towel will work. buffing is fast circular rubbing, not hard, but maybe generating a touch of warmth.

Azureecosse Prieš 21 dieną
Only problem with spraying your headlights with clearcoat is when you get a stone chip on the clearcoat the water gets into it and under the clearcoat and it flakes off and it goes milky white again trust me I tried this years ago its a waste of time and after a 10k miles it will look just as bad as it did before and you will end up hating yourself for doing it . One other thing Polycarbonate headlights expand in direct sunlight, clear coat does not expand to the same rate so it cracks the clearcoat. Clearcoat is only good on metal it does not do well on any plastics even UV approved clearcoat. I ended up clear wrapping my headlights more expensive but never had a problem since.
